The calculator below helps to calculate your BMI - or Body Mass Index1. This is simply a measure of your weight to height. What's your BMI?
Your weight does matterIf your body is underweight then it will struggle to find enough energy for everyday functions and it will be especially hard for your body to find the energy reserves to fight an illness.
If your body is trying to carry around too much weight then this places strains on many things. For example, the heart - keep in mind that the heart cannot get bigger to cope with extra fat that the body takes on. So the original heart has to work harder to pump enough blood to keep that larger mass functioning. Putting extra stress on a heart is never a good idea. It can lead to poor heart health such as poor circulation, high blood pressure and heart attacks - as well as associated health problems such as diabetes and strokes.

There are good fats and bad fats
Saturated fats
are found in meat and poultry. These add unwanted cholesterol to your system. Unlike other fats these are solid at room temperature.
Monounsaturated fats
come from plants such as olives, peanuts and avocado. These reduce the bad cholesterol, confirmed by the low level of heart disease in countries that cook with olive oil.
Polyunsaturated fats
come from other plant sources such as soybeans, almonds and walnuts.
Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oils) help lower cholesterol. Fish with higher levels of omega-3 are tuna, salmon and sardines.
Keep in mind that all fats are fattening.
"All my family are big, so it wasn't such a big deal when I gained a few kilos. Except that I didn't like it. So I thought I'd just stop taking the medicine that caused it but then my doctor convinced me I could have both - the medicine and a decent weight. I just had to make an effort."
