The Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre (EPPIC) is a program of Melbourne Health. The Centre is a specialist service that provides integrated and comprehensive treatment and support targeted to meet the particular needs of young people with emerging psychotic disorders. The service operates within a catchment area of north western and western metropolitan Melbourne, Australia.

People with schizophrenia and their carers came together in 1985 to form the Schizophrenia Fellowship of NSW Inc. The Fellowship works to improve the quality of life of people living with schizophrenia through:

  • programs that support consumers, carers and health professionals
  • raising community awareness of the implications of schizophrenia to reduce stigma
  • lobbying government departments to promote the well being of people living with schizophrenia

The Dual Diagnosis Resource Centre (DPRC) was established in 1999 and brought together three areas: research/evaluation, clinical activity and training /education. The centre provided the foundation for expansion to the Southern Dual Diagnosis team, which is funded by the Victorian State Government, in an initiative aimed at providing secondary consultation and training to both the mental health and drug sectors.

The successful partnership between Westernport Drug and Alcohol Service (WDAS) and the Dual Diagnosis Resource Centre strengthens the foundation of this initiative under the sponsorship of Southern Health. Research activities have expanded through the affiliation with the Dandenong Psychiatry Research Centre (DPRC) and further growth and development is anticipated. Substance Use and Mental Illness Treatment Team (SUMITT) was established in 1998 and is delivered jointly through the North Western Mental Health Program and DAS West Drug and Alcohol Service in Victoria. It is an outreach based program delivering clinical services to clients in north western metropolitan Melbourne, as well as rural areas such as Shepparton, Geelong, Ballarat and Warrnambool. SUMITT provides comprehensive treatment for people suffering a serious mental illness with a co-existing substance use problem through a team of professionals including psychiatric nurses, social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists.
